Your engagement session is the first time we photograph you and your partner together — and for many couples, it is the first professional portrait session they have ever had. I want you to walk away feeling completely stunning, completely yourselves, and completely at ease. Getting dressed for the occasion is a big part of making that happen.
This is the style guide I share with every client before their session — elevated, practical, and deeply personal.
I approach engagement session styling the same way I approach everything else in my work: with intention. The goal is not to make you look like someone else’s engagement session. The goal is to create images that look unmistakably, beautifully yours — ten years from now, twenty years from now. That means choosing pieces that reflect who you actually are, styled in a way that photographs with sophistication and warmth.
The Dress: For summer sessions, I am obsessed with flowing midi and maxi dresses in silk, chiffon, or lightweight cotton. They move beautifully in the breeze, they catch golden light in the most extraordinary way, and they read as timeless in photographs. My favorite palette: warm whites and ivory, soft champagne, dusty rose, warm rust and terracotta, sage. These tones complement almost every skin tone beautifully in summer light.
The Alternative: If dresses are not your style, a beautifully tailored wide-leg trouser in linen or silk paired with an elevated top is equally stunning. Please do not wear anything that makes you feel unlike yourself — confidence always photographs better than a trend.
Jewelry: Keep it personal and meaningful. A delicate necklace, your grandmother’s earrings, a stack of rings that have a story. Avoid anything that looks costume-y or that will distract from your face.
Shoes: Comfortable ones, please! We will be walking. If you love heels, bring them for a few frames and flats for the rest. I have photographed many a beautiful engagement session in bare feet on the beach — there is something perfectly poetic about it.
Hair and Makeup: I strongly recommend professional hair and makeup for your engagement session. Summer heat and humidity can be unforgiving, and professional artistry holds differently than what we can achieve at home. More importantly, when you feel beautiful, it shows. Effortlessly, visibly, photographically — it shows.
The Look: I love when men dress with the same intention as their partner — not necessarily matching, but clearly coordinating. A well-fitted linen shirt in a soft neutral or pale stripe, paired with tailored trousers or clean chinos, reads as elevated and relaxed in equal measure. A blazer is never a bad idea and can always come off classic, elegant, tailored.
Color: Coordinate with your partner rather than matching. If she is in warm ivory, he might be in a soft oatmeal or warm tan. If she is in rust, he might be in a rich camel or earthy olive. The key is that you look like you belong together in the frame — visually harmonious without being identical.
Shoes: Clean, simple leather shoes or loafers for a polished look, or clean white sneakers if the setting and vibe calls for it. Leave the athletic shoes at home.
If your session is at least ninety minutes, I almost always recommend bringing a second outfit. My favorite formula:
Look 1: Elevated and romantic — this is your “elevated” look. The silk dress, the tailored suit, the intentional styling.
Look 2: Personal and relaxed — this is where your personalities come through. A favorite denim jacket, a cashmere crew, comfortable jeans, the boat shoes you actually live in while going to lunch at the club. This look often produces the images people love most.
I have photographed hundreds of engagement sessions, and the couples whose images I am most proud of are rarely the ones who were dressed the most expensively. They are the ones who showed up with intention, with each other, and with a genuine openness to the experience. That is what creates extraordinary images.
Everything else — the outfits, the location, the light — is just the beautiful frame around your love story.
When you book your engagement session with Michelle Behre Photography, we work through a full style consultation together before your session date. I am here to help with everything — from specific outfit feedback to location scouting to building the perfect timeline for your day.

Choosing the perfect engagement session location is one of the most exciting parts of planning your engagement photos. Your location sets the tone for your images and helps tell your story in a way that feels personal, intentional, and authentic to your relationship. Whether you envision romantic gardens, iconic city streets, timeless historic estates, or elegant hotels with old-world charm, New Jersey and New York City offer some of the most beautiful engagement session backdrops on the East Coast.
At Michelle Behre Photography, we believe your engagement session should feel like an experience from planning to print. As leading New Jersey wedding photographers and videographers, we capture luxury weddings and engagement sessions throughout New Jersey, New York City, and destination locations with a cinematic, editorial, and emotive-driven approach.
Below are some of our favorite scenic and aesthetic engagement session locations categorized by style and atmosphere to help inspire your session.
Garden locations create an effortlessly romantic and timeless atmosphere, especially during spring and summer months. The soft florals, pathways, architecture, and natural light provide the perfect environment for elegant imagery.
Some favorite garden-inspired engagement locations include:
Longwood Gardens feels like stepping into a romantic European escape tucked quietly within the countryside of Pennsylvania. From the timeless architecture and grand conservatory to the seasonal blooms and winding garden pathways, every corner feels effortlessly cinematic and immersive. It’s one of my favorite locations for couples wanting an elevated, romantic engagement session filled with movement, quiet in-between moments, and natural beauty throughout every season. Whether surrounded by spring florals, golden summer light, or the glow of the conservatory at dusk, Longwood Gardens creates an experience that feels intimate, timeless, and beautifully intentional for your engagement story. Frelinghuysen Arboretum is one of those timeless New Jersey locations that feels effortlessly romantic in every season. With its historic estate charm, curated gardens, stone pathways, and quiet natural beauty, it creates the perfect backdrop for couples wanting an engagement session that feels both refined and intimate. I love how versatile the grounds are — from soft garden portraits to elegant architectural moments surrounding the estate. The atmosphere feels peaceful, immersive, and deeply connected to nature while still maintaining an elevated aesthetic. It’s the perfect setting for capturing authentic connection, movement, and the quiet in-between moments that make your story uniquely yours. Cross Estate Gardens is one of my favorite hidden gem engagement session locations in New Jersey for couples drawn to a romantic garden aesthetic with historic charm. I love how intimate and peaceful the grounds feel, allowing couples to fully immerse themselves into the experience together. For couples drawn toward nature, open landscapes, and relaxed movement, parks create a versatile setting for engagement sessions year-round.
Some of our favorite park engagement locations include:
Central Park is one of the most iconic and timeless engagement session locations for couples wanting a romantic New York City atmosphere blended with natural beauty and classic architecture. I love how every corner of the park feels cinematic — from the elegance of Bethesda Terrace and Bow Bridge to the quiet pathways of The Mall and the skyline views surrounding Gapstow Bridge. Liberty State Park and the historic brownstone streets throughout Jersey City create the perfect blend of cinematic skyline views and timeless city romance for engagement sessions. I love beginning sessions along the waterfront with sweeping views of the Manhattan skyline and the Statue of Liberty before wandering through the quiet brownstone-lined streets filled with historic charm and beautiful architecture. The contrast between the modern cityscape and intimate neighborhood atmosphere creates so much variety within one session. Whether captured during golden hour or blue hour as the city lights begin to glow, Jersey City always feels effortlessly romantic, elevated, and authentically New York-inspired while remaining uniquely New Jersey. Parks offer incredible versatility — from skyline views and waterfronts to tree-lined paths and architectural details. They’re especially perfect for couples wanting candid imagery with room to walk, move naturally, and simply enjoy time together during their session.
At Michelle Behre Photography, we focus heavily on movement-based direction and documentary storytelling, which makes park settings ideal for creating authentic, immersive engagement imagery.
For couples who love sophistication, architecture, nightlife, and energy, city engagement sessions create a cinematic and modern aesthetic.
New York City engagement sessions remain iconic for a reason. From timeless brownstones and luxury hotels to rooftop views and bustling streets, the city offers endless possibilities for storytelling.
Favorite city-inspired engagement locations include:
Princeton University is one of the most timeless and architecturally beautiful engagement session locations in New Jersey. The historic ivy-covered buildings, gothic archways, quiet courtyards, and elegant stone pathways create an atmosphere that feels romantic, refined, and effortlessly cinematic. I love exploring locations throughout campus including Blair Arch, Nassau Hall, and the hidden garden pathways that photograph beautifully in every season. Princeton offers the perfect balance of historic charm and elevated sophistication while still feeling intimate and personal for couples. Whether beneath golden fall foliage or soft spring blooms, the campus creates a stunning backdrop for authentic, emotional, and timeless engagement imagery. DUMBO is one of my favorite New York City engagement session locations for couples wanting a cinematic blend of iconic skyline views, cobblestone streets, and timeless city romance. I love photographing throughout Washington Street with the Manhattan Bridge framing the skyline, along the waterfront at Brooklyn Bridge Park, and tucked within the quieter corners of the neighborhood where the historic architecture meets the East River. DUMBO feels effortlessly editorial while still allowing space for authentic connection and movement throughout the session. Whether captured at sunrise or during blue hour, the neighborhood creates a modern, elevated atmosphere filled with unmistakable New York energy and romance. There is something timeless about spring at Princeton University — the ivy-covered architecture, quiet pathways lined with blooms, and the unmistakable romance woven throughout campus. As a New Jersey luxury wedding photographer and videographer, capturing Brandon and Jaimie’s engagement session throughout the quintessential Princeton setting felt effortlessly cinematic from beginning to end.
Brandon and Jaimie embraced every moment together with such ease and authenticity, allowing their connection to naturally unfold in front of our lens. From strolling hand-in-hand beneath the historic archways to quiet moments tucked throughout the campus gardens, their session carried an editorial yet deeply personal feel that reflected the beauty of their relationship. The soft spring light paired perfectly with the elegant architecture of Princeton, creating a refined backdrop that felt both romantic and iconic to New Jersey.
Throughout the evening, we focused on creating movement-driven imagery that felt genuine to who they are together — capturing laughter between poses, intimate glances, and the quiet in-between moments that often become the most meaningful. The blend of timeless stone architecture, ivy-covered walls, and blooming spring textures gave their engagement session an elevated East Coast aesthetic while still feeling warm, inviting, and organic.
As New Jersey wedding photographers and videographers, one of our favorite parts of the engagement experience is building genuine relationships with our couples before the wedding day arrives. Sessions like these allow us to connect on a deeper level so that when the wedding day arrives, it feels as though you are celebrating alongside friends who truly know your story.
We are beyond excited to continue documenting Brandon and Jaimie’s next chapter as they celebrate their wedding this September at Mallard Island Estate with Merri-Makers Caterers. Their upcoming coastal estate wedding is sure to be an unforgettable celebration filled with timeless design, heartfelt moments, and the beautiful energy these two share together so effortlessly.

Classic architecture, sweeping grounds, and coastal New Jersey charm set the stage for Liz and Sean’s engagement session at Monmouth University. Their session felt effortlessly elegant—an ideal blend of timeless romance and elevated editorial style.
Monmouth University is one of those rare locations that offers both grandeur and intimacy. Its historic buildings, manicured gardens, and refined pathways create a setting that photographs beautifully in every season, making it a favorite for couples seeking a sophisticated engagement experience in New Jersey.
Few engagement session locations in New Jersey offer the same level of architectural beauty and versatility as Monmouth University. The campus provides a polished, estate-like feel that lends itself perfectly to elevated, fashion-forward imagery.
From stately facades to symmetrical walkways, the campus architecture adds a sense of legacy and refinement to engagement portraits. These elements create images that feel classic today—and just as beautiful decades from now.
The lush landscaping and open green spaces soften the architectural lines, offering a romantic balance that allows couples to move naturally and connect authentically throughout their session.
Liz and Sean approached their engagement session with a quiet confidence and ease that translated seamlessly on camera. Their connection was natural and understated, allowing us to focus on genuine moments rather than forced poses. The result is a gallery that feels romantic, editorial, and deeply personal highlighting a love for fashion sense.
As Michelle Behre Photography, we believe engagement sessions should feel like an experience—not just a photoshoot. Our approach emphasizes movement, connection, and storytelling, ensuring each couple’s images reflect who they truly are together.
Late afternoon sessions provide flattering light that enhances both the architecture and surrounding greenery, creating depth and warmth throughout the gallery.
Classic silhouettes, neutral tones, and tailored looks pair beautifully with Monmouth University’s refined surroundings. Thoughtful styling helps create a cohesive, editorial narrative from start to finish.
Monmouth University requires photography permission in advance. Working with an experienced New Jersey engagement and wedding photographer ensures the process is seamless and allows you to focus on enjoying the experience as you leave it up to the professionals.

Monmouth University continues to be one of our most requested engagement session locations for couples who value timeless elegance and elevated imagery. Its versatility makes it ideal for couples planning luxury weddings throughout New Jersey and beyond.
If you love the feel of Liz and Sean’s session, you may also enjoy:
These sessions highlight how beautifully Monmouth-area locations photograph across different seasons and milestones.
