There’s something undeniably romantic about summer evenings. The warmth in the air, golden light stretching past sunset, the sound of waves crashing along the shoreline, late-night boardwalk strolls, and the feeling that time slows down. At Michelle Behre Photography, summer engagement sessions are some of our favorite stories to capture because they allow couples to fully immerse themselves in the quiet in-between moments together.

Your engagement season is fleeting. Before the timelines, before the vows, before officially stepping into your bridal era, there’s this beautiful chapter where life feels full of anticipation and possibility. Summer engagement sessions preserve that feeling effortlessly — creating imagery that feels cinematic, emotional, nostalgic, and true to your relationship.

As leading New Jersey wedding photographers and videographers, Michelle Behre Photography captures luxury weddings and engagement sessions with a documentary and editorial-inspired approach.

Planning your Session to Compliment Your Day

One of our favorite reasons to schedule a summer engagement session is when couples are getting married during another season entirely. Their session will compliment their Wedding Day images beautifully. Additionally, they will have their save the dates to their guests within ample time.

If your wedding day is taking place in the fall, winter, or spring, your summer engagement session becomes an opportunity to create variety within your overall wedding story. Instead of having both your engagement and wedding images feel visually similar captured in the same season, choosing an opposing season adds depth and contrast to your gallery, story, and heirloom albums.

Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

  • a cozy winter wedding with a carefree summer engagement session,
  • a romantic spring wedding with golden beach portraits,
  • or a fall estate wedding with nostalgic twilight boardwalk imagery.

The contrast creates a fuller visual story of your relationship throughout different chapters of your engagement season. Summer sessions also allow couples to embrace a more relaxed, playful atmosphere that often feels entirely different from the elegance and formality of a wedding day.

Capturing the Fleeting Romance of Summer Date Nights

Summer engagement sessions naturally feel effortless because they mirror real experiences couples already love sharing together.

Late sunsets, warm evenings, spontaneous adventures, and lingering conversations all create the perfect environment for authentic imagery. Rather than forcing overly posed moments, we focus on documenting movement, connection, and emotion as your evening naturally unfolds.

Some of the most romantic engagement sessions happen during:

  • twilight encounters along the shoreline,
  • slow walks through beach towns or along the water,
  • cocktails at your favorite rooftop bar,
  • golden-hour boardwalk rides,
  • or quiet moments watching the sunset together and at your favorite restaurant as we leave you two for dinner together.

There’s a nostalgia attached to summer evenings that translates beautifully into photographs. The imagery feels cinematic and intimate — like scenes from your own love story unfolding naturally in real time.

At Michelle Behre Photography, we intentionally photograph those quiet in-between moments: the laughter between poses, windswept hair along the beach, your hands brushing together during a walk, or the way you look at each other when you think no one is watching.

Those are the moments that matter most.

Beach Sessions Along the Jersey Shore

As New Jersey wedding photographers, we may be slightly biased, but the Jersey Shore offers some of the most beautiful and versatile engagement session locations on the East Coast.

From the refined charm of Spring Lake and Bay Head to the energy of Asbury Park and nostalgic boardwalk towns throughout the shore, summer creates the perfect setting for engagement sessions that feel timeless yet deeply personal.

Beach engagement sessions allow couples to fully relax. Shoes come off, timelines disappear, and the evening becomes less about “taking photos” and more about spending intentional time together.

The shoreline also provides incredible natural variety:

  • soft dunes and light greenery,
  • colorful boardwalk lights and vintage arcades,
  • beach bonfires,
  • and quiet sunset moments along the water.

The result is imagery that feels elevated while still preserving the carefree romance summer is known for.

A Relaxed, Vacation-Like Experience

One of the reasons couples love summer engagement sessions is because they often feel more like a date night or mini getaway than a formal photoshoot.

There’s less pressure to perform and more space to simply enjoy the experience together.

We encourage our couples to plan engagement sessions around activities and locations that genuinely reflect their relationship. Some of our favorite summer-inspired engagement session ideas include:

  • a twilight hike overlooking the coastline,
  • a beach bonfire with music and champagne,
  • a carnival or summer fair,
  • coffee shop or cocktail bar dates,
  • visiting your favorite boardwalk,
  • sunset boat rides,
  • or nostalgic drive-in movie nights.

These experiences create real memories together while allowing us to capture imagery that feels authentic to your story.

The beauty of engagement sessions is that they preserve not only what your relationship looked like during this season — but what it felt like.

Creating Memories Before Your Bridal Era Begins

Before the wedding day arrives, before the dress is carefully hung in the bridal suite, before the first dance and emotional vows, there’s this season of becoming.

Your engagement session freezes that chapter in time.

At Michelle Behre Photography, our approach is centered around documenting genuine connection through emotional storytelling and timeless imagery. We believe your engagement photos should feel immersive, effortless, and reflective of the relationship you’ve built together.

As trusted New Jersey wedding photographers and videographers, we are honored to capture couples throughout the region while preserving the fleeting, romantic moments that shape your story long before the wedding day arrives. Spring in New Jersey and New York marks the beginning of one of the most beautiful seasons for wedding celebrations. As gardens bloom and the city comes alive again, many couples take advantage of the season’s soft light, fresh florals, and romantic atmosphere to document the moments leading up to their wedding day.

While the wedding itself is the centerpiece of the celebration, many brides are now choosing to capture more of their story. From engagement sessions to bridal showers and bridal portraits, these spring photo sessions create a complete visual narrative of the journey to the aisle.

If you’re planning a wedding in New Jersey or New York, here are three must-have spring photo sessions that couples our Michelle Behre Photography couples are loving right now.

Spring Engagement Sessions in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania

Engagement sessions are often the first opportunity couples have to celebrate their wedding journey through photography. Spring is one of the most sought-after seasons for engagement photos in the NJ and NYC area because of the soft natural light, blooming flowers, and vibrant outdoor locations.

Couples often choose locations that feel meaningful to their story, whether that’s a scenic park, waterfront view, or iconic city setting. In New York City, engagement sessions often take place in areas like Central Park, cobblestone streets in SoHo, or along the Brooklyn waterfront for skyline views. In New Jersey, estates, gardens, and charming towns provide beautiful backdrops for romantic portraits.

A spring engagement session also allows couples to become comfortable in front of the camera before their wedding day. It’s a relaxed experience that helps create natural, editorial-style images that can later be used for save-the-dates, wedding websites, or invitations.

Many couples also choose to style their engagement sessions with multiple outfits, allowing for both a casual look and a more elevated, fashion-inspired aesthetic.

Bridal Shower Photography

Bridal showers have become some of the most beautifully styled pre-wedding events, especially during the spring season. From garden brunches to elegant restaurant celebrations, these gatherings are filled with thoughtful details, emotional moments, and the people who have supported the bride throughout her life.

Documenting a bridal shower allows those moments to be preserved forever — from heartfelt speeches and laughter to the stunning décor often designed by planners or family members.

Spring bridal showers often feature:

  • floral tablescapes
  • champagne and brunch gatherings
  • garden party themes
  • soft pastel color palettes

For many brides in the NJ and NYC wedding scene, bridal shower photography has become just as meaningful as the wedding day itself. It captures a different side of the celebration — intimate, joyful, and filled with family traditions.

These images often become treasured memories for both the bride and her loved ones, especially when the day includes multiple generations celebrating together.

Spring Bridal Boudoir Sessions

Bridal portrait sessions are becoming increasingly popular among modern brides who want time dedicated solely to capturing their bridal look

Unlike wedding day portraits, bridal sessions take place before the wedding in a relaxed setting. This allows the bride to wear her gown, style her hair and makeup, and create elegant portraits without the timeline pressure of the wedding day.

Spring is an ideal time for bridal portraits in both New Jersey and New York. Gardens, estates, waterfront locations, and historic architecture provide stunning backdrops that elevate the images into editorial-style photographs.

These sessions allow brides to fully showcase:

  • their wedding gown
  • veil styling
  • bouquet design
  • heirloom accessories

Many brides also use these portraits for bridal magazines, wedding websites, or printed albums.

The result is a collection of timeless images that celebrate the bride in a refined and artistic way.

Spring Night-Before Wedding Photography: Capturing the Celebration Before “I Do”

While the wedding day is filled with unforgettable moments, many couples are now choosing to document the evening before their wedding as well. From rehearsal dinners to welcome parties, the night before the wedding is often when friends and family from different parts of the couple’s lives gather together for the first time.

For weddings in New Jersey and New York, these celebrations are often beautifully planned events held at elegant restaurants, waterfront venues, private estates, or boutique hotels. The atmosphere tends to be relaxed and intimate, allowing couples to spend meaningful time with their closest family and friends before the excitement of the wedding day begins.

Night-before photography captures moments that are often just as emotional as the wedding itself — heartfelt toasts, laughter around dinner tables, hugs from loved ones who traveled far to be there, and the anticipation that fills the room as the big day approaches.

Many couples also incorporate special traditions during these gatherings, such as rehearsal ceremonies, welcome cocktails, or gift exchanges with parents and bridal party members. Documenting these experiences adds another chapter to the wedding story and preserves memories that might otherwise go unseen.

From a storytelling perspective, photographing the night before the wedding creates a fuller narrative of the entire wedding weekend. It highlights the connections between family and friends and captures the genuine excitement leading up to the moment the couple says “I do.”

For couples planning multi-event wedding weekends in New Jersey or New York, night-before photography ensures that every meaningful moment — not just the ceremony and reception — becomes part of the legacy of their wedding celebration.

Capturing the Full Story of Your Wedding Season

Your wedding day is only one chapter of a much larger story. Engagement sessions, bridal showers, and bridal boudoir sessions to the night before your wedding all represent meaningful milestones during the months leading up to the celebration.

By documenting these events, couples create a visual timeline of their wedding season — one filled with anticipation, excitement, and the people who helped make the day so special.

For brides planning spring weddings in New Jersey or New York, these photo sessions offer the perfect opportunity to capture the beauty of the season while preserving memories that will last for generations.

If you’re planning a spring wedding and want to document every chapter of your celebration, thoughtful photography ensures that every moment — from the engagement to the final walk down the aisle — becomes part of your legacy. Curating each and every chapter of your wedding story

As you plan your wedding in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania remember that your celebration is made up of more than just one day. From engagement sessions to bridal showers and the excitement of the night before your wedding, each moment is part of the story leading up to “I do.” Thoughtfully documenting these events allows you to relive the entire experience for years to come. If you’re planning a spring wedding or pre-wedding celebration in NJ or NYC, we are ready to capture every chapter of your wedding journey with timeless, editorial-style photography.
