One of the questions I receive most often from newly engaged couples as a New Jersey Wedding Photographer — right after “how do we find the perfect location?” — is what do we actually wear? I love this question. Truly. Because what you wear to your engagement session matters more than most people realize, and getting it right makes an enormous difference in how your images look, how you feel, and ultimately — how effortless the entire experience becomes.
After over a decade of photographing couples across New Jersey, New York City, and destinations beyond, here is my honest, practical, and deeply style-forward guide to dressing for your summer engagement session.
Before you open Pinterest or start scrolling through Instagram, take a breath and ask yourself: what do we want these images to feel like? Romantic and timeless? Editorial and modern? Sun-drenched and carefree? Your answer should drive every outfit decision. Actually every decision. I always recommend my couples think of their engagement session outfits the way a stylist thinks about a fashion editorial — everything should be intentional, everything should tell a story.
Summer light is rich and warm, and certain palettes absolutely sing in it. My perennial favorites for summer sessions include:
Warm neutrals: Ivory, champagne, warm white, camel, and soft terracotta look absolutely luminous in golden hour light. They photograph as sophisticated and timeless — images that will never feel dated.
Soft earth tones: Sage, dusty rose, warm rust, and muted mauve complement outdoor settings beautifully without competing with the landscape.
Classic navy and white: For a more nautical or coastal session — especially at a location like Asbury Park — a crisp white linen and navy combination is eternally chic.
What to avoid: Bright neon colors and busy patterns. They pull the eye away from you and can cast unflattering color onto your skin in sunlight. Matching your partner perfectly head-to-toe can also look stiff — I prefer couples who coordinate rather than match.
Summer engagement sessions often happen in nature — on beaches, in gardens, on boardwalks, in cobblestone streets. Fabrics that move with the environment — silk, chiffon, linen, lightweight cotton — photograph beautifully and feel far more alive than stiff, structured fabrics. A flowing midi dress catching the breeze at the Jersey Shore? That is the kind of image that ends up on the wall and mounted beautifully to remind you just how incredible this time in life is daily.
I always encourage couples to bring two outfit changes if the schedule allows. A great formula: one more elevated, polished look (think a silk dress and tailored blazer) and one that feels more relaxed and personal to you as a couple (your favorite jeans, a cashmere sweater, bare feet on the beach). This gives your gallery range and tells a fuller story. More personal.
For summer sessions, I always recommend booking a professional for hair and makeup — not because you need to look like someone else, but because professional artistry simply holds differently in summer heat and humidity. You will feel more confident, and that confidence absolutely translates in your photographs.
Ultimately, the most important thing you can wear to your engagement session is something that feels completely like you. The couples whose images I am most proud of are the ones who showed up in clothes they actually love — clothes that tell something true about who they are. That authenticity is what makes an image timeless.
Curious about how to style your specific session? When you book your engagement session with Michelle Behre Photography, we walk through a full style consultation together — because every detail of your experience matters to me. Inquire here to get started.
A season as fleeting and full as an engagement deserves to be documented with the same care and intention you are pouring into every detail of what comes next. These are the in-between days — the ones before the vows, before the flowers, before the first dance — and they are some of the most quietly beautiful of your entire love story. Do not let them pass without something to hold onto.
At Michelle Behre Photography, we specialize in capturing this chapter in a way that feels completely natural, refined, and true to who you are as a couple — never staged, only beautifully preserved. From guiding you through location and styling to moving through your session with a quiet, unhurried presence that lets real moments breathe, every part of the experience is curated with deep intention. What you walk away with is not just a gallery of images — it is the first chapter of a bespoke heirloom that will live in your home, in your albums, and in your family for generations.
If you are dreaming of an engagement session that is as effortless as it is extraordinary — images that stop the scroll and make you feel something every time you look at them — we would be truly honored to be part of your story. Inquire within for further details on availability.

There is something timeless about spring at Princeton University — the ivy-covered architecture, quiet pathways lined with blooms, and the unmistakable romance woven throughout campus. As a New Jersey luxury wedding photographer and videographer, capturing Brandon and Jaimie’s engagement session throughout the quintessential Princeton setting felt effortlessly cinematic from beginning to end.
Brandon and Jaimie embraced every moment together with such ease and authenticity, allowing their connection to naturally unfold in front of our lens. From strolling hand-in-hand beneath the historic archways to quiet moments tucked throughout the campus gardens, their session carried an editorial yet deeply personal feel that reflected the beauty of their relationship. The soft spring light paired perfectly with the elegant architecture of Princeton, creating a refined backdrop that felt both romantic and iconic to New Jersey.
Throughout the evening, we focused on creating movement-driven imagery that felt genuine to who they are together — capturing laughter between poses, intimate glances, and the quiet in-between moments that often become the most meaningful. The blend of timeless stone architecture, ivy-covered walls, and blooming spring textures gave their engagement session an elevated East Coast aesthetic while still feeling warm, inviting, and organic.
As New Jersey wedding photographers and videographers, one of our favorite parts of the engagement experience is building genuine relationships with our couples before the wedding day arrives. Sessions like these allow us to connect on a deeper level so that when the wedding day arrives, it feels as though you are celebrating alongside friends who truly know your story.
We are beyond excited to continue documenting Brandon and Jaimie’s next chapter as they celebrate their wedding this September at Mallard Island Estate with Merri-Makers Caterers. Their upcoming coastal estate wedding is sure to be an unforgettable celebration filled with timeless design, heartfelt moments, and the beautiful energy these two share together so effortlessly.

Spring is one of the most magical seasons for engagement photography, especially in locations from Philadelphia to New York City. As engagement photographers in New Jersey, it’s truly one of our favorite times of year to capture couples. The landscape transforms almost overnight—trees begin to bloom, gardens fill with soft color, and golden sunlight lingers just a little longer in the evenings.
There’s also an unmistakable energy that arrives with spring. After the quiet of winter, the season brings warmth, movement, and excitement. For our couples, it often coincides with the most joyful part of wedding planning—the moment when everything begins to feel real. Engagement sessions during this time beautifully reflect that excitement and anticipation as our brides and grooms prepare for their New Jersey wedding days and the new chapter ahead.
Below are a few spring engagement sessions and celebrations that perfectly highlight the elegance and romance of the season.

Spring engagement photos in NJ are known for their breathtaking florals. Cherry blossoms, magnolias, and lush gardens create a naturally romantic setting that feels almost editorial in style.
Couples often choose locations like historic gardens, estates, or scenic parks where the blooming trees create a soft pastel backdrop. Flowing dresses, light neutral tones, and elegant styling complement the setting beautifully. The result is a collection of images that feel timeless, refined, and full of life. One of our favorite Philadelphia wedding venues and engagement session destinations will forever be Longwood Gardens at Kennett Square PA.
Spring gardens also allow us to capture movement and texture—petals falling, soft breezes through the trees, and golden light filtering through branches. These colorful, natural elements bring a sense of effortless, timeless and classic romance to every image I capture. The light glittering across the petals. The way he looks at you.
For couples who love a more sophisticated city atmosphere, NYC engagement photography in the spring offers an entirely different but equally stunning aesthetic.
Iconic locations throughout Manhattan and Philadelphia come alive as the weather warms. Tree-lined streets, brownstones, and classic architecture create a refined backdrop that pairs beautifully with elevated wardrobe choices. Spring in the city has a chic, editorial energy—perfect for couples who want their engagement photos to feel like they belong in the pages of a magazine.
Some of our favorite NYC spring sessions incorporate:
The combination of soft spring light and timeless city scenery creates images that feel modern, romantic, and effortlessly stylish.

Many of our couples also choose waterfront estates, private gardens, or elegant historic properties for their engagement sessions. As a luxury engagement photographer in New Jersey, we love curating sessions that feel personal while still capturing an elevated editorial look.
Spring is ideal for these locations because everything feels fresh and alive. Hydrangeas begin to bloom, greenery returns to the landscape, and the soft evening light creates a glow that is simply unmatched.
These settings are perfect for couples who want their engagement session to mirror the aesthetic of their wedding day—refined, romantic, and timeless.
Spring is also a beautiful season for bridal showers and pre-wedding celebrations. Garden parties, elegant brunches, and floral-inspired events perfectly complement the season’s aesthetic.
From delicate table settings to outdoor celebrations surrounded by blooms, these moments offer another opportunity to document the joy leading up to the wedding day. Capturing these events alongside engagement sessions helps tell the full story of a couple’s journey toward their wedding.

What makes spring engagement sessions so special is how naturally the season reflects the emotions couples are experiencing—joy, excitement, and anticipation for the future.
As New Jersey wedding photographers, it’s an honor to document this time for our couples. From blooming gardens in New Jersey to elegant city streets in New York, spring offers endless opportunities to create photographs that feel both romantic and timeless.
If you’re planning your wedding and dreaming of spring engagement photos in NJ or NYC engagement photography, this season provides the perfect backdrop to celebrate the beginning of your story together.
Spring engagement sessions are truly one of the most romantic ways to celebrate this season of anticipation before your wedding day. From the soft pastel blooms to the golden evening light, the beauty of spring creates the perfect backdrop for timeless, elegant portraits.
If you’re dreaming of a garden-inspired engagement session, our team would love to help you curate something truly special. From the breathtaking blooms at Longwood Gardens to the romantic landscapes of New Jersey Botanical Garden, and the elegant charm of historic Dupont mansions and estates, we help couples select locations that feel both editorial and deeply personal.

Spring in New Jersey and New York marks the beginning of one of the most beautiful seasons for wedding celebrations. As gardens bloom and the city comes alive again, many couples take advantage of the season’s soft light, fresh florals, and romantic atmosphere to document the moments leading up to their wedding day.
While the wedding itself is the centerpiece of the celebration, many brides are now choosing to capture more of their story. From engagement sessions to bridal showers and bridal portraits, these spring photo sessions create a complete visual narrative of the journey to the aisle.
If you’re planning a wedding in New Jersey or New York, here are three must-have spring photo sessions that couples our Michelle Behre Photography couples are loving right now.
Engagement sessions are often the first opportunity couples have to celebrate their wedding journey through photography. Spring is one of the most sought-after seasons for engagement photos in the NJ and NYC area because of the soft natural light, blooming flowers, and vibrant outdoor locations.
Couples often choose locations that feel meaningful to their story, whether that’s a scenic park, waterfront view, or iconic city setting. In New York City, engagement sessions often take place in areas like Central Park, cobblestone streets in SoHo, or along the Brooklyn waterfront for skyline views. In New Jersey, estates, gardens, and charming towns provide beautiful backdrops for romantic portraits.
A spring engagement session also allows couples to become comfortable in front of the camera before their wedding day. It’s a relaxed experience that helps create natural, editorial-style images that can later be used for save-the-dates, wedding websites, or invitations.
Many couples also choose to style their engagement sessions with multiple outfits, allowing for both a casual look and a more elevated, fashion-inspired aesthetic.

Bridal showers have become some of the most beautifully styled pre-wedding events, especially during the spring season. From garden brunches to elegant restaurant celebrations, these gatherings are filled with thoughtful details, emotional moments, and the people who have supported the bride throughout her life.
Documenting a bridal shower allows those moments to be preserved forever — from heartfelt speeches and laughter to the stunning décor often designed by planners or family members.
Spring bridal showers often feature:
For many brides in the NJ and NYC wedding scene, bridal shower photography has become just as meaningful as the wedding day itself. It captures a different side of the celebration — intimate, joyful, and filled with family traditions.
These images often become treasured memories for both the bride and her loved ones, especially when the day includes multiple generations celebrating together.

Bridal portrait sessions are becoming increasingly popular among modern brides who want time dedicated solely to capturing their bridal look
Unlike wedding day portraits, bridal sessions take place before the wedding in a relaxed setting. This allows the bride to wear her gown, style her hair and makeup, and create elegant portraits without the timeline pressure of the wedding day.
Spring is an ideal time for bridal portraits in both New Jersey and New York. Gardens, estates, waterfront locations, and historic architecture provide stunning backdrops that elevate the images into editorial-style photographs.
These sessions allow brides to fully showcase:
Many brides also use these portraits for bridal magazines, wedding websites, or printed albums.
The result is a collection of timeless images that celebrate the bride in a refined and artistic way.

While the wedding day is filled with unforgettable moments, many couples are now choosing to document the evening before their wedding as well. From rehearsal dinners to welcome parties, the night before the wedding is often when friends and family from different parts of the couple’s lives gather together for the first time.
For weddings in New Jersey and New York, these celebrations are often beautifully planned events held at elegant restaurants, waterfront venues, private estates, or boutique hotels. The atmosphere tends to be relaxed and intimate, allowing couples to spend meaningful time with their closest family and friends before the excitement of the wedding day begins.
Night-before photography captures moments that are often just as emotional as the wedding itself — heartfelt toasts, laughter around dinner tables, hugs from loved ones who traveled far to be there, and the anticipation that fills the room as the big day approaches.
Many couples also incorporate special traditions during these gatherings, such as rehearsal ceremonies, welcome cocktails, or gift exchanges with parents and bridal party members. Documenting these experiences adds another chapter to the wedding story and preserves memories that might otherwise go unseen.
From a storytelling perspective, photographing the night before the wedding creates a fuller narrative of the entire wedding weekend. It highlights the connections between family and friends and captures the genuine excitement leading up to the moment the couple says “I do.”
For couples planning multi-event wedding weekends in New Jersey or New York, night-before photography ensures that every meaningful moment — not just the ceremony and reception — becomes part of the legacy of their wedding celebration.

Your wedding day is only one chapter of a much larger story. Engagement sessions, bridal showers, and bridal boudoir sessions to the night before your wedding all represent meaningful milestones during the months leading up to the celebration.
By documenting these events, couples create a visual timeline of their wedding season — one filled with anticipation, excitement, and the people who helped make the day so special.
For brides planning spring weddings in New Jersey or New York, these photo sessions offer the perfect opportunity to capture the beauty of the season while preserving memories that will last for generations.

There is nothing quite like a summer engagement session along the New Jersey coastline. Warm light, ocean breezes, and the effortless romance of the shore created the perfect setting for Alex and Joe’s engagement session at Ortley Beach.
Their session felt relaxed yet refined—an authentic reflection of who they are together. Ortley Beach offered a beautiful balance of laid-back coastal charm and timeless seaside elegance, allowing us to capture imagery that feels both editorial and deeply personal.
Ortley Beach is an ideal choice for couples drawn to natural beauty and understated coastal romance. Its quiet shoreline, soft sand, and expansive ocean views provide a serene backdrop that never feels overdone.
Golden summer light paired with the natural movement of the ocean creates images that feel airy and romantic. The shoreline allows couples to move freely, resulting in photographs that feel organic rather than posed.
Ortley Beach offers a classic New Jersey beach setting that feels timeless year after year. Its simplicity allows the focus to remain on connection, emotion, and story—elements that define an elevated engagement session.
Alex and Joe approached their engagement session with ease and intention. Their natural chemistry and quiet moments together made this session feel intimate and authentic. Rather than forcing moments, we focused on gentle prompts and movement, allowing their connection to unfold naturally against the coastal backdrop.
As Michelle Behre Photography, our goal is always to create imagery that feels refined yet genuine. Engagement sessions are about more than location—they are about capturing a season of life in a way that feels true, timeless, and meaningful.
Early evening sessions offer the most flattering light, with soft tones and subtle warmth reflecting off the water and sand.
Light fabrics, neutral tones, and effortless silhouettes pair beautifully with a beach setting. Movement-friendly outfits photograph especially well, adding to the relaxed, editorial feel of a summer shoreline session.
Choosing a quieter stretch of beach and working with a photographer familiar with coastal conditions ensures a seamless experience and elevated final gallery.
