There’s something incredibly special about the season before the wedding day arrives. The anticipation, the excitement, the quiet in-between moments before you officially step into your bridal era — it deserves to be documented just as intentionally as your wedding day itself. At Michelle Behre Photography, we believe your engagement session is so much more than “just photos.” It’s an experience that allows you to connect, slow down, and preserve this chapter of your story before everything changes.

As leading New Jersey wedding photographers and videographers, our team at Michelle Behre Photography captures luxury weddings throughout New Jersey, New York, and destination locations with an editorial yet deeply emotive approach. One of the most important pieces of creating natural, authentic wedding imagery begins long before the wedding day itself — during your engagement session.

Breaking the Ice if You’ve Never Been Professionally Photographed

For many couples, their engagement session is the very first time they’ve stepped in front of a professional camera together. It’s completely normal to feel nervous or unsure about what to do with your hands, where to stand, or how to “pose naturally.” The truth is — almost every couple feels this way at first.

Your engagement session gives us the opportunity to break down those walls in a relaxed environment without the timeline pressures of a wedding day. Instead of immediately meeting us on one of the biggest days of your life, you’re able to spend intentional time getting comfortable with our approach, direction, and energy behind the camera.

During your session, we guide you through movement-based prompts, candid interactions, and subtle posing that feels effortless and genuine. Rather than stiff or overly posed imagery, we focus on documenting the connection between you two — the laughter, the quiet touches, the way you naturally interact together. By the end of the session, most couples tell us they forgot the camera was even there.

That comfort and familiarity translates beautifully into your wedding day experience.

Building Confidence in Front of the Camera

Confidence is everything when it comes to wedding photography. When couples feel relaxed, present, and connected, their images immediately become more authentic and emotional.

Engagement sessions help you understand how we work while also allowing you to see firsthand that you do not need to be “models” to create beautiful imagery. Our role is to guide you every step of the way while creating an environment where you can simply focus on each other.

Many couples arrive at their engagement session saying:
“We’re awkward in photos.”
“We don’t know how to pose.”
“We’re nervous.”

By the end, those same couples are moving naturally, laughing together, and trusting the process completely.

That confidence carries directly into your wedding portraits. Instead of spending time feeling anxious in front of the camera on your wedding day, you already know what to expect. You know how we direct movement, how we capture emotion, and how effortlessly the experience can feel.

This allows your wedding photography experience to become more immersive, emotional, and documentary-driven rather than feeling staged or forced.

You Want Candid Wedding Images — But Feel Awkward in Front of the Camera

One of the most common things couples tell us is:
“We want candid photos.”

What many people don’t realize is that candid imagery still requires trust and comfort in front of the camera. Genuine moments happen most naturally when couples are fully present with each other rather than worrying about how they look.

Your engagement session becomes practice for letting go and entrusting the moment.

At Michelle Behre Photography, we focus heavily on movement, interaction, and creating space for authentic moments to unfold organically. We may have you walk together through a meaningful location, whisper to one another, dance slowly at sunset, or simply pause and soak in the moment together.

The result is imagery that feels cinematic, emotional, and deeply personal.

When wedding day arrives, you’ll feel so natural in front of the camera and fully lean into those moments naturally. Instead of feeling hyper-aware of the camera, you’re able to stay grounded in the experience — allowing us to capture the honest emotions, joyful reactions, and quiet in-between moments that define your story.

Capturing This Chapter Before Your Bridal Era Begins

Your engagement season deserves to be remembered for what it is — a fleeting chapter filled with anticipation, excitement, and the beginning of your forever together.

These images become more than save-the-dates or social media posts. They become timeless reminders of who you were before becoming husband and wife. The season before the dress, before the vows, before the celebration.

Whether we’re documenting your session along the New Jersey shoreline, in the streets of New York City, at a meaningful estate, or somewhere woven into your story together, engagement sessions allow us to preserve memories that feel intentional, elevated, and true to you.

At Michelle Behre Photography, we believe your photographs should feel effortless, emotional, and deeply connected to your relationship. Our goal is always to create imagery that not only looks beautiful — but feels like you.

As trusted New Jersey wedding photographers and videographers, we are honored to document love stories throughout the region while creating heirloom imagery our couples will cherish for generations to come.

Springtime in Central Park always brings an undeniable sense of romance to New York City. From the blooming trees lining the pathways to the timeless architecture surrounding Central Park West, Liz and Matt’s engagement session felt effortlessly elegant and cinematic from the moment we began exploring the city together. As a New Jersey wedding photographer and videographer, documenting couples in iconic locations that hold both beauty and meaning is always such an inspiring experience.

Throughout the evening, Liz and Matt embraced the energy of the city while remaining completely immersed in one another. We wandered throughout the quintessential corners of Central Park capturing movement-filled moments, quiet embraces beneath the spring blooms, and timeless portraits framed against the classic New York architecture. Their connection felt natural, refined, and deeply authentic — the kind of love that translates beautifully both in photographs and on film.

One of the most beautiful aspects of engagement sessions in New York City is the blend of romance and motion happening simultaneously around you. From the winding pathways of the park to the skyline views surrounding the Upper West Side, every backdrop added another layer of sophistication and storytelling to their session. We focused on curating imagery that felt editorial yet emotionally grounded, documenting the in-between moments just as intentionally as the portraits themselves.

As wedding photographers and videographers, engagement sessions are such an important part of the experience we create for our couples. It allows us to build trust, connection, and comfort together before the wedding day arrives so that every moment feels effortless and natural when the celebration begins.

We are so excited to continue documenting Liz and Matt’s story this October at Liberty House with Landmark Weddings. From the breathtaking Manhattan skyline views to exploring Liberty State Park together, their upcoming wedding day is sure to be filled with timeless elegance, romantic city views, and unforgettable moments surrounded by family and friends.

There’s something truly unforgettable about engagement sessions in New York City. Brian and Kelsey’s session began in lush greenery at Central Park and finished with refined sophistication around the Union League Club New York and The Plaza Hotel. From intimate moments at Bethesda Terrace and Bow Bridge, beneath beneath the twinkling lights of the city, to elegant portraits on classic stone terraces, every frame shares a moment that NYC engagement photographers captured with intention.

Why New York? A Backdrop Like No Other
Central Park provides timeless natural beauty — wide open lawns, shaded pathways, and classic architectural details make it a dream location for engagement photos. For couples who love the city’s blend of nature and style, there’s no better setting. We timed the session around the golden hour to ensure that soft, glowing light wrapped the entire experience.

As the afternoon transitioned, we moved the session to the Union League Club and around the Plaza Hotel. These environments offered a luxury aesthetic — formal stone details, elegant interiors, and the perfect balance of city energy and refined charm to compliment their day beautifully.

Wardrobe, Details, and Personal Moments
Brian chose a tailored suit that echoed the sophistication of Union League Club, while Kelsey’s flowing gown danced in the park breeze and framed her silhouette against soft sunlight. Their candid laughter — shared whispers, gentle embraces, and spontaneous moments fit with a pair of martinis and an abundance of laughter throughout the hallways of the Union League Club — are what make these images feel timeless, refined, and editorial.

The Experience Through the Lens
Capturing an engagement session in New York requires not just technical skill, but an eye for story and emotion. Whether we’re capturing the quiet magic of a private moment in the park or editorial moments captured at a private club, my goal is to create keepsake images that feel as elevated and personal as your love story.

Ready to capture your Central Park and Union League Club engagement?
Check your date today and let’s make your NYC engagement session is as curated and is just as unique as your love story. We so look forward to capturing this couple’s New Jersey private estate wedding in the fall in the hills of Morris County.

A romantic engagement session captured by New York City Engagement Photographer Michelle Behre Photography at Central Park and the MET Museum is the perfect way to celebrate love in New York City. As New Jersey and New York City wedding photographers, we often travel to iconic locations like these to capture our couples’ stories, and Kirstin and Cameron’s session was nothing short of magical. Their timeless style and the iconic backdrop of the MET Museum steps and Central Park’s lush scenery made this engagement shoot unforgettable.

A Romantic New York City Engagement Photographer

Kirstin and Cameron chose two of the most iconic locations in New York City for their engagement session. We began the day at Central Park, where the couple strolled hand-in-hand along shaded pathways and under the breathtaking arches of Bethesda Terrace. The natural beauty of Central Park combined with Kirstin and Cameron’s radiant love created a serene and romantic atmosphere for their photos.

Why Central Park is Perfect for Engagement Photos

Central Park is a timeless location that provides a variety of scenic backdrops, from rustic bridges to manicured gardens. The park’s peaceful surroundings allowed Kirstin and Cameron to relax and be themselves, resulting in authentic, heartfelt moments captured on camera. As North Jersey wedding photographers, we love incorporating lush greenery and historic architecture into engagement sessions to give couples a timeless look for their photos.

From Central Park to the MET Museum

After capturing the serene beauty of Central Park, we headed to the MET Museum for a more sophisticated and iconic setting. The grandeur of the MET steps added a chic, urban feel to Kirstin and Cameron’s engagement session, perfectly balancing the natural beauty of Central Park with the elegance of a city landmark.

Why the MET Museum is a Top Choice for Engagement Shoots

The MET Museum is a symbol of art, culture, and sophistication, making it an ideal location for couples looking for a polished and stylish backdrop. Kirstin and Cameron’s outfit choices—a chic white jumpsuit for Kirstin and a tailored blue suit for Cameron—complemented the museum’s grandeur and made their photos look effortlessly elegant. As top NJ wedding photographers, we always recommend choosing locations that reflect a couple’s unique style and personality.

Styling for an Engagement Session

Kirstin and Cameron’s outfit choices were perfect for their engagement shoot. Kirstin’s classic white dress for the Central Park portion exuded timeless beauty, while her chic white jumpsuit at the MET Museum added a contemporary twist. Cameron’s neutral tones in Central Park and his sharp blue suit at the MET perfectly balanced the settings’ natural and urban vibes.

Outfit Tips for Your Engagement Photos

When planning your engagement session, we recommend coordinating your outfits to complement your chosen locations. Neutral tones and classic pieces never go out of style and ensure your photos remain timeless. If you’re planning a session at two different locations, consider bringing an outfit change to suit each setting’s mood and atmosphere.

Capturing Timeless Moments with New York City Wedding Photographers

As experienced New York City wedding photographers, we understand the importance of capturing authentic moments that reflect a couple’s love story. Kirstin and Cameron’s engagement session perfectly showcases our approach to creating elegant, natural, and timeless photos.
